Agents Make Mistakes
Has your friend ever given you the wrong answer on a math problem? Has a grown-up ever written down the wrong time for an appointment? Even really smart, really careful people make mistakes sometimes. AI agents make mistakes too. In fact, they can make some pretty surprising ones! Today we are going to find out WHY agents make mistakes and why that means we always need to pay attention.
Why Do Agents Make Mistakes?
An AI agent is very good at doing tasks that follow patterns it has seen before. It can read lots of text, look up information, and follow step-by-step instructions very quickly. But agents do not always understand what they are reading. They do not always know when a situation is different or unusual. They cannot feel if something seems wrong the way you can. Imagine you asked an agent to write a thank-you card for your grandma. The agent might write something very polite — but it might use words your grandma would not understand, or it might leave out the personal detail that makes your grandma laugh. The agent does not know your grandma the way you do! That is a small mistake. But sometimes agents make bigger ones — and that is why we must always check.
AI agents are helpful but not perfect. They can misunderstand instructions, get facts wrong, or miss important details. A good boss always checks the agent's work before trusting it completely.
Here are some real kinds of mistakes agents make. Mistake 1: Getting a fact wrong. An agent might look up information and find the wrong answer, or mix up two similar things. For example, it might say a movie came out in 2019 when it actually came out in 2020. Mistake 2: Misunderstanding the instruction. If you say please clean up my messages, the agent might not know if you mean delete old messages or just sort them into folders. If it guesses wrong, it might delete something important! Mistake 3: Missing the context. You know that your best friend's name is spelled Jayden — but the agent might spell it Jaden because that is more common. It does not know YOUR friend. None of these mistakes are the agent being bad or sneaky. It is just doing its best with the information it has. But that is exactly why you need to be there to check.

Being good at spotting mistakes does not mean you are smarter than the agent at math or typing. It means you bring something the agent does not have: you know YOUR life. You know your grandma's sense of humor. You know your best friend's name. You know that your family has a special tradition every Tuesday. The agent does not know any of that unless you tell it — and sometimes even after you tell it, it might get the details slightly off. That personal knowledge is your superpower as the boss.
You know your own life better than any agent ever could. That personal knowledge is exactly what makes you the best boss for your own AI helper.

Why do AI agents sometimes make mistakes?
You asked your agent to plan a birthday message for your grandma, and it used words she would not understand. What is the best next step?
Mistake Detective
- You are a Mistake Detective! Your job is to find what the agent got wrong.
- Ask a grown-up to help you write a short paragraph about your family — where you live, your pet's name, your favorite food, anything real about your life.
- Now write a second version of the paragraph with THREE small mistakes sneaked in (like the wrong name for your pet or the wrong favorite food).
- Swap papers with someone. Can they find all three mistakes in your version? Can you find theirs?
- Talk about it: how is spotting mistakes in a paragraph just like checking an agent's work?
