Keep Secrets Off AI

You already know that some things are just for you and your family — like the key to your front door or your toothbrush. Nobody else needs those things! Well, some information works the same way. It is called private information, and today we are going to talk about keeping it off AI.

What Is Private Information?

Private information is anything that could help a stranger figure out who you are or where to find you. Here are some examples: Your full name (first AND last name together) Your home address — the street, city, or zip code Your school's name Your phone number or your family's phone number Passwords to any app, game, or website Your birthday combined with your last name Photos of your face AI is not a person, but when you type something into it, that information goes to a computer somewhere. Private things should stay private — even from computers.

Keep These Off AI

Never type your full name, home address, school name, phone number, or any password into an AI. These are yours to protect.

Here is a story to make it concrete. Imagine a girl named Maya. She was asking an AI for help writing a birthday party invitation. She typed: 'Help me write an invitation. My name is Maya Chen. I live at 42 Maple Street. My party is Saturday.' Maya's mom saw it and said, 'Great invitation idea! But let's take out our address and last name. We can just say Maya's party and share the address privately with friends.' Maya fixed it, and the invitation was just as good — but much smarter. Maya did not do anything bad. She just learned something new. Now she knows!

Never type your home into an AI chatbot.

How do you ask AI for help without giving away private information? Easy — use general words instead of specific ones. Instead of: 'My name is Alex and I go to Riverside Elementary...' Try: 'A kid wants to ask their teacher a question about...' You get just as good an answer, and you stayed private. Smart!

Use General Words

You never need to tell AI your real name or where you live to get a great answer. Use words like 'a student' or 'a kid my age' instead.
