Always Double-Check AI
Here is something surprising about AI: it can be wrong. Not sometimes — it can be wrong pretty often, especially about facts. A good AI user knows this, and knows how to check. That is what we are learning today.
Why Does AI Make Mistakes?
AI learns by reading enormous amounts of text — billions of sentences written by people. It gets really good at sounding confident and helpful. But here is the catch: sounding right and being right are two different things. AI does not look up facts in real-time like a search engine. It kind of guesses based on patterns it has seen. So it might say a dinosaur name wrong, get a math fact off by one, or describe a country using information that is out of date. The scary part? AI usually sounds very sure of itself even when it is wrong. That is why YOU have to be the fact-checker.
AI can make mistakes and still sound totally sure of itself. Always check important facts with a book, a teacher, or a trusted website.
Let's follow a student named Jordan. Jordan asked an AI: 'How many legs does a spider have?' The AI said: 'Spiders have six legs, just like insects.' But wait — Jordan remembered something from science class. Jordan checked a library book. Spiders have EIGHT legs! The AI was wrong. Jordan did not panic. Jordan just smiled, wrote down the correct answer from the book, and moved on. That is exactly what a smart learner does.

So when should you double-check AI answers? Always double-check when: you are using the answer for schoolwork, a fact sounds surprising or new to you, the topic is about health or safety, or the answer is a number, date, or name. You do not need to check every tiny thing — like if you ask AI to help rhyme a poem. But for real facts that matter, check them. Good researchers always use more than one source!
Check a book from your school or home library. Ask a teacher or knowledgeable grown-up. Look at a trusted website — like a museum, zoo, or government site.

Fact-Checker Challenge
- Pick one of these questions to investigate: How many bones are in the human body? What is the tallest mountain on Earth? How far away is the Moon?
- If you have access to AI, ask it your question and write down its answer.
- Now find the same fact in a book, encyclopedia, or trusted website.
- Compare the two answers. Did they match? Were they different?
- Write one sentence about what you learned about checking facts.
- Share your finding with a grown-up or classmate.
