We try to be honest with our friends, our family, and our teachers. But did you know that honesty matters when you use AI too?

What Is AI, and Why Does Honesty Matter?

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. It is a kind of computer program that can answer questions, write stories, and help solve problems. AI is a tool — a lot like a calculator or a search engine. When you use any tool, honesty still matters. For example, if you used a calculator on a test and then told your teacher you did all the math in your head, that would not be honest. The same idea works with AI. Being honest with AI means: telling the truth about what AI helped you with, not using AI to pretend you did something you did not do, and not asking AI to help you lie to someone else.

Here is a story about honesty and AI. Leo asked an AI to write a poem for his mom's birthday. The AI wrote a beautiful poem. Leo printed it out and gave it to his mom. She loved it! But later, Leo felt a little uncomfortable. He had not told his mom the poem came from a computer. The next day, Leo went back to his mom and said, 'Mom, I want to tell you something. An AI helped write that poem. I still wanted to give you something special, but I should have told you the truth.' His mom gave him a big hug. She said she was proud of him for being honest. Leo felt so much better after telling the truth.

Three Ways to Be Honest with AI

Here are three simple rules that will help you stay honest whenever you use AI. Rule 1: Tell people when AI helped you. If AI wrote something or made something and you share it, let others know. Rule 2: Do not use AI to trick people. Never ask AI to make up a story that pretends to be real, or to help you fool someone. Rule 3: Do your own thinking first. Try the work yourself before asking AI. Your ideas matter!
