Not Using AI to Be Mean

A hammer is a useful tool. You can build a bookshelf with it. But you could also use a hammer to break things. The hammer does not decide — you do. AI is a powerful tool too. You can use AI to write stories, learn things, solve problems, and create. But some people try to use AI in ways that hurt others. That is never okay — and it is not who you want to be.

Ways AI Can Be Used Unkindly

Here are some examples of using AI in mean ways. These are all things a good person would choose NOT to do. Using AI to write cruel or embarrassing things about someone and sharing them. Using AI to make fake pictures or fake quotes to trick people into believing something that is not true. Asking AI to write nasty messages to send to someone you are angry at. Using AI to make up rumors about a classmate. Using AI to trick someone into feeling scared or ashamed. All of these can really hurt real people — just as much as mean words spoken out loud, or even more, because they can spread so quickly online.

Important to Know

Using AI to bully, trick, or humiliate someone can cause serious harm. It can also get you into serious trouble at school or with parents. More importantly, it is simply wrong.

Here is a story about choosing kindness. Raj was angry at a classmate named Danny, who had laughed at Raj's drawing during art class. It really hurt his feelings. Raj thought about asking an AI to write something embarrassing about Danny to get back at him. He even started typing. But then he stopped. He imagined how Danny would feel seeing those words. He remembered how HE had felt when Danny laughed at him. He did not want to make someone else feel that way — even someone who had hurt him. Instead, Raj asked the AI to help him write down his feelings in a journal entry. He described how hurt he felt and what he wished had happened differently. Writing it out helped him feel much calmer. The next day, Raj told a teacher how he felt. The teacher helped Raj and Danny talk it out. By the end of the week, Danny had apologized. Raj was glad he had not used AI to be mean. It would have made everything worse.

When you are angry or upset, it can feel satisfying to imagine striking back. That feeling is normal and human. But the choice of what you actually DO matters more than any feeling. Here is a helpful way to think about it. Before using AI when you are upset, ask yourself three questions. First: Could what I am about to make hurt someone's feelings? Second: Would I want someone to do this to me? Third: Is there a kinder way I could deal with these feelings? If you can answer those three questions honestly, you will almost always choose the kinder path.

When Feelings Are Big

If you are very angry or upset, it is okay to step away from any screen — including AI — for a few minutes. Take some deep breaths. Talk to an adult you trust. Come back when you feel calmer.

Why is using AI to spread rumors or fake information about someone especially harmful?
