AI Rules That Keep Us Safe
Think about your school. There are rules everywhere. Walk in the hallways. Raise your hand before speaking. No running by the pool. These rules might sometimes feel like a lot — but every single one of them exists for a reason. They protect you, protect your classmates, and make sure school is a good place for everyone. AI has rules too. And those rules exist for exactly the same reasons.
Why Rules Exist
Rules are not about being bossy. Rules are about protecting people. The rule to wear a seatbelt in a car protects your body in an accident. The rule to wash hands before eating protects everyone from getting sick. The rule to be kind to classmates protects feelings and makes learning better for everyone. AI rules work the same way. One important AI rule is that AI should not share private information about people without permission. This protects your privacy — your address, your phone number, personal details about your family. Just like you would not want a stranger knowing all of that, AI should not share it either. Another AI rule is that AI should try to be honest and not make things up. When AI says something confidently that is actually wrong, it can spread false information. Rules about honesty help keep that from happening. A third kind of AI rule is about fairness. AI should treat everyone equally — no matter where they are from, what they look like, or how much money their family has. Rules about fairness help make sure AI is safe and helpful for every child, not just some. A fourth kind of AI rule is that people must be able to stay in control of AI. AI should not secretly do things without anyone knowing. Transparency rules make sure people can see what AI is doing and why.
AI rules exist to protect people — your privacy, your safety, your fairness, and your right to stay in charge. Rules are not obstacles; they are the guardrails that make AI safe and good.

Who makes the rules for AI? Right now, it is a mix of people: engineers who build AI, governments that create laws, organizations that study AI safety, and — importantly — everyday people who use AI and speak up about what they need. As you grow up, you will be part of conversations about what rules AI should follow. You will vote, you will work, and you might even help build AI yourself one day. The rules being written today will keep changing, and the voices of people who grew up with AI — people like you — will matter a lot. Rules for AI are not finished. They are always being improved. And the best rules come from people who care about keeping everyone safe.
When you use an AI tool and notice something that feels unfair or unsafe, say something. Talk to a teacher or parent. Write feedback. Your observations help the people who make the rules understand what matters.
Why is it important for AI to have an honesty rule?
Who is involved in making rules for AI?
Design an AI Safety Rulebook
- Imagine you have been asked to write three rules for an AI assistant that will be used in your school.
- For each rule, write:
- - The rule itself (one clear sentence)
- - Why this rule is important (one or two sentences)
- - What could go wrong if the rule did not exist (one sentence)
- Here is an example to get you started:
- Rule: AI must tell students when it is not sure about an answer.
- Why it matters: Students could believe wrong information if AI sounds confident about something it actually got wrong.
- Without this rule: Kids might study wrong facts and do poorly on tests.
- Share your rulebook with a partner or the class. Do you agree on the most important rules? What rules did different people come up with that you had not thought of?
