What Is a Community?

Look out your window. You might see houses, apartments, a park, maybe a school. All those places — and the people who live and work in them — are part of something called a community. A community is a group of people who live or work near each other and help each other out. Communities can be tiny, like your neighborhood block, or very big, like your whole city.

Communities Are Full of Helpers

Every community has people whose jobs are to help everyone else. Think about your neighborhood. There are probably teachers who help children learn. There are firefighters who rush in when there is danger. There are doctors and nurses who take care of sick people. There are garbage collectors who keep the streets clean. There are bus drivers who help people get around. All of these helpers work together so that everyone in the community can live a safe and happy life. Communities work best when people look out for one another.

The Big Idea

A community is a group of people who live or work near each other and help each other. Nobody in a community has to do everything alone!

Communities share many things. They share roads and parks and schools. They share libraries full of books. They share playgrounds where children can run and laugh. They share hospitals that help people when they are sick. Sharing things makes a community stronger. When everyone chips in, everyone benefits. Imagine if every family had to build their own road to school — that would be very hard! Instead, the community builds the road together and everyone gets to use it.

Communities also share stories and traditions. Neighborhoods have festivals, fairs, and celebrations that bring everyone together. Maybe your community has a summer cookout in the park, or a winter parade, or a school talent show. These events help people feel like they belong. Feeling like you belong is one of the most important things a community gives you. You are not alone — you are part of something bigger.

Communities Are About People

Communities are not just about buildings and roads. They are about people caring for each other. A strong community is one where everyone feels seen, heard, and helped.

My Community Map

  1. Get a blank piece of paper and some crayons or markers.
  2. Draw a map of your community — real or imaginary!
  3. Draw at least five places: maybe a school, a park, a hospital, a grocery store, and some houses.
  4. Next to each place, write or draw one person who helps there. For example: at the hospital, draw a nurse.
  5. Show your map to someone and explain: who are the helpers in your community, and how do they help?
  6. Bonus: add one place that you wish your community had and explain why it would help people.
