Community Helper Plan

You have learned so much in this module. You know that AI helps keep people healthy, grow food, respond to emergencies, protect the Earth, include everyone, share knowledge, and bring people together. Now it is your turn. Every community has problems that need solving. And every problem is an invitation for a creative thinker — like you — to imagine a solution. In this lesson, you are going to be an AI Community Designer. You will look at your own community, choose a real challenge, and plan an AI helper that could make a difference.

Step One: Know Your Community

Before you design any solution, you need to understand the problem. Good designers start by observing — looking carefully and listening. Think about the community where you live. What do you notice? Are there streets with too much traffic? Are there elderly people who seem lonely? Does your school have a long wait list for tutoring? Is there a park that floods every time it rains? Are there families who have trouble finding affordable food? Every one of those observations points to a real need. And every real need is a starting point for helping.

Designers Start With Observation

The best AI tools are built to solve real problems that real people face. Before you build anything, you need to know the problem deeply. That is why designers always start with observation and listening.

Here are some example community problems that kids have noticed: Lihn lives in a city neighborhood. She noticed that elderly people on her block often sit alone on their porches and do not seem to have many visitors. She wonders if there is a way to connect them with younger neighbors who could visit. Marcus lives near a small farm. He noticed that the farm sometimes throws away vegetables that did not sell — while people at the local food pantry need more fresh vegetables. He wonders if there is a way to connect the farm's extras with the people who need them. Amina noticed that students at her school who speak languages other than English sometimes get left out of after-school activities because announcements are only in English. She wonders if there is a way to translate announcements automatically. Every one of these observations is the seed of a great AI community helper.

Your Observation Matters

You do not need to be a computer scientist or an adult to notice a community problem. Kids notice things that grown-ups walk past every day. Your fresh eyes are a superpower.

Now let us think about how AI could help. Remember everything you have learned: AI can match people and resources. AI can translate languages. AI can predict problems before they happen. AI can answer questions any time of day. AI can watch for danger and send alerts. AI can help people communicate who have different abilities. As you design your Community Helper Plan, think about which AI skill fits your community's problem best.

My Community Helper Plan

  1. Complete all five steps of your Community Helper Plan. Write or draw your answers on paper, in a notebook, or on a poster.
  2. STEP 1 — OBSERVE: What is one problem or challenge you have noticed in your community? Describe it in two to three sentences. Be specific — not just 'people are sad' but 'elderly people on my block are alone and do not have visitors.'
  3. STEP 2 — WHO IS AFFECTED: Who in your community is most affected by this problem? Describe them. How many people might be helped if this problem were solved?
  4. STEP 3 — DESIGN YOUR AI HELPER: Give your AI helper a name and describe what it does. Write three specific things your AI helper would do to address the problem. Use what you have learned — can it match people? Translate? Predict? Alert? Answer questions?
  5. STEP 4 — DRAW IT: Draw a picture of your AI helper in action. Show it helping someone in your community. Add a speech bubble or label explaining what it is doing.
  6. STEP 5 — SHARE AND GET FEEDBACK: Share your plan with a family member, teacher, or friend. Ask them: Does this seem like it would really help? Is there anything important you missed? Write down one piece of feedback you received and how it might improve your plan.
  7. Bonus challenge: Write a one-sentence 'elevator pitch' — a very short description of your AI helper that you could say in the time it takes to ride one floor in an elevator. Example: 'My AI helper connects lonely elderly neighbors with young volunteers who want someone to visit.'
