Think about how much you have already changed since you were a baby. You learned to walk, then to run. You learned to talk, then to read whole books. Year by year, you grow and learn new things. Guess what? AI is growing too. And the amazing part is that you and AI are going to grow up together. That is exactly what this lesson is about!
What Does It Mean to Grow Up With AI?
Right now, AI is already all around you. It helps sort photos on your family's phone. It recommends songs on music apps. It answers questions when you talk to a smart speaker. But AI today is still pretty young. Scientists are learning more about it every single year. The AI that exists when you finish high school will be much more powerful than the AI of today. The AI that exists when you are a grown-up will be even more amazing. You are growing up at the most exciting moment in history. Every year you learn something new in school. And every year, the AI around you learns new things too.
You and AI are both growing and learning at the same time. By the time you are an adult, you will be the expert who understands AI because you grew up with it!
Here is a story about a girl named Zara. When Zara was in kindergarten, her family got a smart speaker. All it could do was play music and set timers. It was fun but simple. By the time Zara was in third grade, the smart speaker could answer harder questions and even help her practice spelling. It had gotten smarter. When Zara got to middle school, AI tools could help her write first drafts of essays and suggest great books she might like. The AI kept growing. Zara grew alongside it the whole time. She learned what AI was good at. She learned what it could not do. By the time she was a teenager, she understood AI better than most adults — because she had watched it change and grow her whole life.

- Think about AI you have already seen in your life — apps, games, smart devices, or anything that seemed to 'know' things.
- On a piece of paper, draw a line from left to right. Label the left side 'Now' and the right side 'When I'm a Grown-Up.'
- On the left, draw or write two or three AI things you see or use today.
- On the right, imagine and draw what AI might be able to do when you are twenty-five years old. Let your imagination run free!
- Share your timeline with a family member and explain your predictions. Ask them if they think you are right!
