Good Dreams for AI
We have been dreaming about all sorts of wonderful things AI might do someday. But here is an important question: how do you know if a dream for AI is a good one? Not every idea is automatically a great one just because it sounds exciting. A good dream for AI is one that is kind, helpful, and fair — one that makes life better for people, animals, and the planet. Today we are going to think carefully about what makes a dream a good dream.
What Makes a Dream a Good Dream?
A good dream has three important qualities. First, it helps people. A good dream for AI makes someone's life better, healthier, safer, or happier. It does not help one group of people by hurting another group. It helps as many people as possible, and especially people who need help most. Second, it is fair. A good dream gives everyone a fair chance, no matter where they live, how much money their family has, or what they look like. If an amazing AI tool only worked for rich people and left everyone else behind, that would not be a truly good dream. Third, it is kind. A good dream treats people and animals with dignity and respect. It does not trick people, spy on them without permission, or make decisions that affect them without giving them a say.
A truly good dream for AI is helpful, fair, and kind. It makes life better for everyone — not just a few people — and it treats every person and living thing with dignity and respect.
Let us think about some examples. Imagine an AI that helps doctors find diseases earlier — but only works for patients in very expensive hospitals. Is that a good dream? It is helpful for some people, but it is not fair. A truly good version of that dream would work for every hospital, even small ones in faraway places. Now imagine an AI that helps every child learn to read in their own language, for free. Is that a good dream? It helps people, it is fair because it is free for everyone, and it respects every child's culture and language. That is a much better dream! Thinking about fairness and kindness is not just nice to do — it is essential. The people building AI today are making choices that will affect everyone in the future.
Match each AI dream description to whether it is a good dream or needs to be improved to become one.

Here is something wonderful: when you dream about AI, you get to choose to dream big AND dream kind. You can imagine AI that helps the kid down the street and the child on the other side of the world. You can imagine AI that protects animals people usually forget about, like insects and fish that keep the planet healthy. You can imagine AI that makes sure every person has a voice in decisions that affect them. Kind dreams are not small dreams. They are the biggest, most ambitious dreams of all — because they say: everyone matters.
The kindest AI dreams are the ones that say: everyone deserves to be helped, everyone deserves to be treated fairly, and everyone has something valuable to offer the world. Dream that big!

The Good Dream Checklist
- Think of a dream for AI — it can be one you made up in an earlier lesson or a brand new idea.
- Write your dream at the top of a piece of paper.
- Then ask yourself three questions and write your answers:
- 1. HELPFUL: Who does this AI help, and how does it make their life better?
- 2. FAIR: Does it help everyone equally, or only some people? How could it be made fairer?
- 3. KIND: Does it treat people and animals with dignity and respect? Does anyone get left out or hurt by it?
- If your dream passes all three checks, put a star next to it. If not, write one change you would make to improve it.
- Share your checklist and your improved dream with your class.
