Patterns Help Us Predict
Have you ever noticed that after Monday comes Tuesday, and after Tuesday comes Wednesday — every single week? Or that the sun always rises in the morning? Those are patterns. And here is the exciting part: patterns are the secret ingredient that makes predictions possible!
What Is a Pattern?
A pattern is something that happens again and again in the same order or the same way. Patterns can be in shapes: circle, square, circle, square, circle — what comes next? Square! Because that is the pattern. Patterns can be in numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8 — what comes next? 10! Each number goes up by 2. Patterns can be in events: every Friday your family has pizza night. Every morning the school bell rings at 8 o'clock. These are patterns in time. When you spot a pattern, you can predict what comes next — because the pattern tells you!
A pattern is something that repeats. Once you see the pattern, you can predict what comes next in the sequence.
Here is a story about patterns. Sofia notices that every time it gets very cold outside, her mom makes hot soup for dinner. It has happened ten times this winter already. One afternoon the temperature drops way down. Sofia walks inside and says, "Mom, I think we are having soup tonight!" She is right! Sofia used a pattern she had noticed many times to make a great prediction. The more times something repeats, the stronger the pattern, and the more confident you can be in your prediction.
Match each pattern to what you could predict next.

Patterns are not just for math class. Doctors notice patterns in symptoms to predict what a patient might have. Farmers notice patterns in weather to predict when to plant crops. Even animals use patterns — a bear knows that berries are ripe in late summer because that pattern repeats every year. Spotting patterns is one of the most useful thinking skills you can have.
Look at your week. What happens the same way every day or every week? Each repeating thing is a pattern you can use to predict what comes next.
What is a pattern?
You see this sequence: star, moon, star, moon, star. What comes next?
Pattern Hunt
- Walk around your home or classroom for five minutes.
- Find three patterns — things that repeat.
- For example: tiles on the floor, a repeating design on a cup, or a daily routine that happens the same way.
- For each pattern, write or draw what the pattern looks like.
- Then write: what would you predict comes next, based on this pattern?
- Share your three patterns with someone and explain your predictions.
