Being a Kind Boss
Think about the best leader you have ever seen — maybe a coach, a teacher, a parent, or even a character in a book or movie. What made them great? Were they only bossy and demanding? Or were they also fair, patient, and kind? The best leaders — the ones people actually want to follow — combine being in charge with being a good person. Being powerful and being kind are not opposites. The best bosses are both. Being the boss of your AI tools is no different.
What Does Kindness Have to Do With AI?
You might wonder: AI is not a person. Why does it matter if I am kind when I use it? Here is the thing: the way you use AI says a lot about the kind of person you are. And the choices you make with AI affect real people — people who see the things you create, people who receive messages you write with AI help, people who might be helped or hurt by how you use AI tools. A kind boss thinks about other people. They ask: If I use AI to write a message to someone, does it sound caring and real? If I use AI to create something, is it honest? Am I using AI in a way that is fair to everyone involved?
Being the boss of AI is not just about power — it is about responsibility. A good boss uses AI in ways that are honest, fair, and kind to the people around them.
Here is a story that shows what kind bossing looks like. Noah had a classmate named Yusuf who was going through a tough time. Noah wanted to send Yusuf a nice note but was not sure what to say. He asked AI to help him write a message. The AI gave him a very polished, formal message. Noah read it. It sounded nice, but it did not sound like him — and it did not mention anything specific about Yusuf. So Noah used the AI message as a starting point, then rewrote it in his own words and added two things he actually knew and cared about: that Yusuf was a great soccer teammate, and that he was always making people laugh. Noah sent his own version. Yusuf told him it was the kindest thing anyone had ever written to him. Noah used AI — but he made sure the kindness came from him, not the machine.

There is one more part of being a kind boss that is very important: honesty. If you use AI to create something and you share it with others, being honest about how you made it is part of being a good person. You do not have to announce it every single time — but you should never pretend that something AI wrote is entirely your own when it is not. That would be unfair to the people reading it. Kind bosses are honest bosses. They use AI as a tool and they stand behind what they create — including being truthful about how they made it.
When you share something made with AI help, be honest about it when it matters. Pretending AI-made work is entirely your own can be unfair to others. Honesty is one of the most important qualities of a good boss.
Noah received a polished AI message but rewrote it in his own words with specific details about his friend. Why was this a better choice?
Which of these is an example of using AI in an unkind or dishonest way?
Kind Boss Letter
- Think of one person in your life you would like to say something kind to — a friend, a family member, a teacher, anyone.
- First, write a draft of what you want to say completely on your own. It does not have to be perfect — just from the heart.
- If you have access to an AI tool, ask it to suggest a way to say something kind to that person.
- Read the AI suggestion. What did it get right? What did it miss about the real person?
- Now write your final version: use your own draft as the base, and borrow any good phrases from the AI if you like — but make sure it still sounds like you and includes something specific and true about that person.
- Send or share your letter. You are a kind boss!
