Not Being Tricked
A magician waves a handkerchief and a coin disappears. It seems impossible — until someone explains the secret. Once you know how the trick works, it never fools you again. AI can be used to pull off tricks too. Not magic tricks — more like tricks that make you believe something that is not true, or make you feel something on purpose so you do what someone wants. But just like a magic trick, once you understand how it works, it loses its power over you.
Tricks That Use AI
Here are some real ways that AI can be used to trick people. Fake photos and videos: AI can create pictures and videos of things that never happened. Someone can make a photo of a place that does not exist, or a video of a person saying something they never said. These are called deepfakes. Personalized ads: AI can study everything you have looked at online and then show you exactly the kinds of ads designed to make you want things most. It is not random — it is targeted at you personally. Fake reviews: AI can write hundreds of five-star reviews for a product, even if the product is not actually good. This makes it hard to know what is really worth buying. Urgency and fear: Some AI systems are designed to make you feel rushed — like if you do not act RIGHT NOW something terrible will happen. That feeling of urgency is manufactured on purpose to stop you from thinking carefully.
Any time something online makes you feel a sudden rush of excitement, fear, or urgency — pause. That feeling might be manufactured by AI to stop you thinking clearly. Take a breath and think before you act.
How Understanding Protects You
Knowing how these tricks work is your best shield. Here is why. When you know that AI can create fake photos, you do not automatically believe every shocking image you see. You ask: could this be AI-generated? Where did this come from? When you know that ads are personalized using your data, you realize that the ad for those sneakers is not showing up because sneakers are great — it is showing up because an AI decided you specifically are likely to buy them. When you know that reviews can be faked in bulk by AI, you look for other signals before trusting a product. When you know that urgency is a technique, you feel that rushed feeling and think: ah, this is a trick — I will slow down instead of speeding up. Every single one of these protections starts with understanding.

Trick Spotter Challenge
- Think about the last time you were online — maybe watching a video, browsing a website, or looking at an app.
- Try to remember: Did you see any ads? Did anything feel urgent or exciting in a pushy way? Did you see something surprising that might have been fake?
- On a piece of paper, write down one thing you noticed that might have been an AI-powered trick.
- Then write: How could understanding AI help you handle that moment better?
- Share your example with the class and discuss: How can we help each other spot these tricks?
