Good Questions for AI
Imagine you had a very knowledgeable helper — someone who had read millions of books, visited every topic in the world, and was always happy to help. That is a little bit like what an AI assistant is. But here is something important: even the most knowledgeable helper can only give you a good answer if you ask a good question. If you walked up to a librarian and said, tell me something, the librarian would be puzzled. Tell you something about what? About dinosaurs? About cooking? About space? The more clearly you ask, the better the answer you get. Today you will learn how to ask AI good questions — questions that are clear, specific, and helpful.
Fuzzy Questions Get Fuzzy Answers
A fuzzy question is a question that is too vague. It does not give the helper enough information to know what you really want. Here are some fuzzy questions: Tell me about animals. What is science? How do things work? These are so broad that the helper does not know where to start. They might give you a general answer that does not help you at all. A clear question tells the helper exactly what you want to know. It gives details. It says who or what you are interested in, and why. Here are the same questions, made clearer: How do dolphins talk to each other underwater? Why does mixing baking soda and vinegar make bubbles? How does a magnet stick to a refrigerator but not to a wooden table?
Clear, specific questions get clear, useful answers. The more detail you put into your question, the more exactly the answer will fit what you actually want to know.
Match each fuzzy question to its clearer, more specific version.

How to Make Your Question Better
There are three easy tricks for making any question better before you ask it. Trick one: Add detail. Instead of asking about dogs, ask about a specific thing dogs do. Trick two: Tell the helper who you are. If you say, explain this like I am seven years old, the answer will be written in simpler words that are easier for you to understand. Trick three: Say what you plan to do with the answer. If you say, I am writing a story about a dog who can fly — what kinds of things could help it steer in the wind? the helper knows exactly what kind of information to give. Putting these tricks together turns a fuzzy question into a crystal-clear one.
Fill in the missing word.
One more important thing to know about asking AI questions: AI can make mistakes. AI is very knowledgeable, but it is not perfect. It can sometimes say something that sounds correct but is actually wrong. This is called a hallucination — a fancy word for when AI confidently says something that is not true. This is why it is always a good idea to check important facts from a second source — a book, a trusted website, or a knowledgeable person. Using AI is a great starting point for your curiosity, but your own careful thinking is just as important.
AI gives answers based on patterns in what it has read, but sometimes it gets things wrong. Always think carefully about what AI tells you, and check really important facts with another source. Your brain is always part of the team.

Question Makeover
- Read these three fuzzy questions and rewrite each one to make it clearer and more specific.
- Fuzzy question 1: Tell me about space.
- Fuzzy question 2: How do animals work?
- Fuzzy question 3: What is math?
- For each question, use at least one of the three tricks: add detail, say who you are, or say what you will do with the answer.
- Bonus: If you have access to an AI assistant, try asking both your fuzzy version and your clear version. See if the answers are different!
