Andreas Vesalius: The Body Mapmaker

Andreas Vesalius was born in Brussels in 1514 and studied at the University of Padua in Italy. Unlike most doctors of his time, he personally dissected human bodies instead of relying only on old writings. In 1543, he published De Humani Corporis Fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human Body), filled with precise illustrations of muscles, bones, and organs. His careful observations corrected many mistakes made by the ancient Roman physician Galen, who had based much of his anatomy on dissecting animals, not humans.

William Harvey: Chasing the Blood

William Harvey was born in England in 1578 and also studied at Padua. In 1628, he published a groundbreaking work proving that blood circulates continuously through the body in one direction, pumped by the heart in a closed loop. Harvey used measurement and math โ€” calculating how much blood the heart pumps in an hour โ€” along with careful animal experiments, to disprove the older belief that blood was made fresh in the liver and burned up by the body.

Evidence Over Old Beliefs

Both Vesalius and Harvey challenged trusted authorities by relying on direct observation and measurement instead of accepting old texts as automatically true. This shift toward testing ideas with evidence was a major step toward modern science. Today, scientists still follow this same basic approach: observe carefully, test your ideas, and be willing to correct even long-held beliefs when the evidence says otherwise.
