Bringing a Bouncing Ball to Life in Adobe Animate
Every professional animator, from the artists who made Mickey Mouse hop across a screen in 1928 to the team behind today's biggest cartoons, learns the exact same first exercise: making a ball bounce. It looks simple, but a convincing bounce has to fake real gravity โ squish, stretch, and perfect timing โ using nothing but still pictures shown one after another. Once you can fake gravity with your mouse in Adobe Animate, you're ready to animate almost anything.

The Timeline: Animation's Sheet Music
In Adobe Animate, the Timeline runs along the bottom of the screen like a row of tiny picture frames. Cartoons are usually shown at 24 frames per second, meaning 24 still pictures flash by every single second to trick your eyes into seeing smooth motion. Animators don't have to draw all 24 โ a trick called "on twos" repeats each drawing for two frames, so you only need 12 unique poses per second, which is exactly what classic Disney and Saturday-morning cartoons did to save time.
Keyframes vs. Regular Frames
A keyframe is a frame where YOU set an important pose โ the ball at the top of its bounce, or squished flat on the ground. A regular frame just repeats the pose before it, holding it in place. In Adobe Animate you can right-click the Timeline and choose "Insert Keyframe" to lock in a new pose, or "Insert Frame" to extend an existing one. Between two keyframes, Animate can also automatically calculate the in-between motion using a feature called a Classic Tween or Motion Tween, so you don't have to hand-draw every single frame.
Squash and Stretch: Faking Gravity
Squash and stretch is one of animation's oldest and most important principles. As the ball falls, it stretches slightly taller and thinner to show speed. The instant it hits the ground, it squashes flat and wide for one or two frames before springing back to round and bouncing up again. A ball that stays a perfectly round circle the entire time looks stiff and fake, even though nothing about its size actually changed โ squash and stretch is what sells the illusion of weight and impact.
Onion skinning lets you see faint, ghost-like outlines of the frames before and after the one you're working on, layered like transparent onion paper. Turn it on using the onion-skin icons below the Timeline so you can line up exactly how far the ball should move between poses, keeping your bounce smooth instead of jumpy.
Building the Bounce, Frame by Frame
Start by converting your ball artwork into a Symbol (Modify > Convert to Symbol) so Animate can tween it smoothly. Set a keyframe with the ball high in the air, then a keyframe a few frames later with the ball squashed at the ground, then another keyframe with it back to round and rising. Each bounce should lose a little height compared to the last one, just like a real ball loses energy every time it hits the floor โ that's what makes a bounce cycle read as realistic instead of robotic.

Animate a 10-Frame Bounce
In Adobe Animate (or any drawing/animation tool available to you), create a ball symbol and build a bounce cycle across at least 10 frames: a keyframe at the top of the arc, a squashed keyframe at the ground, a stretched keyframe while falling, and a second, lower bounce to show energy loss. Turn on onion skinning while you work to keep the spacing smooth. Deliverable: export your finished animation as a GIF or short video file showing the complete bounce cycle.
