The First Computer Virus and the Birth of Cybersecurity
In 1971, a program called Creeper started popping up on computer screens connected to ARPANET, the internet's ancestor. It didn't steal anything or break anything. It just displayed a message: 'I'm the Creeper, catch me if you can!' and hopped from computer to computer. It was the first computer virus ever recorded -- and it accidentally kicked off a decades-long race between people who break into computers and people who protect them.

Creeper Meets Reaper
After Creeper spread across ARPANET, a programmer named Ray Tomlinson (who also invented email) wrote a program called Reaper specifically to chase Creeper down and delete it. Reaper is considered the first antivirus software in history. This pattern -- someone builds something disruptive, someone else builds a defense -- has repeated every year since, just at a much bigger scale.
The Morris Worm Wakes Everyone Up
In 1988, a Cornell graduate student named Robert Tappan Morris released a program meant to measure how big the internet was. Instead, a bug in his code made it copy itself over and over on the same machines, crashing an estimated 6,000 computers -- roughly 10% of the entire internet at the time. Morris became the first person convicted under the new US Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. His worm is why universities and companies started creating dedicated computer security teams, called CERTs (Computer Emergency Response Teams), which still exist today.
The Morris Worm caused an estimated $100,000 to $10 million in damage from lost computer time. It proved that software bugs weren't just annoying -- they could shut down critical systems used by real people.

Modern cybersecurity relies on layers of protection. A firewall acts like a security guard checking every piece of data trying to enter or leave a network, blocking anything suspicious. Encryption scrambles your data into unreadable code that only the right key can unlock -- it's why your online banking looks like gibberish to anyone who intercepts it. Passwords and two-factor authentication (needing both a password AND a code sent to your phone) make sure only you can get into your own accounts.
Cybersecurity as a Career
Today, cybersecurity is a massive field. 'White hat' hackers are hired by companies to break into their own systems on purpose, finding weaknesses before criminals do -- this is called penetration testing. Analysts monitor networks 24/7 watching for unusual activity. The field exists because the same internet that connects us also exposes us, and someone has to keep watch.
