Firewalls, Passwords, and VPNs: Your Cybersecurity Toolkit

In 2017, computer researchers found that "password123" and "123456" were still among the most commonly used passwords in the world โ€” even though they can be guessed by a hacking program in under one second. Meanwhile, a password like "Tr33House!Purple42" could take a computer over a hundred years to crack. The tools you use to protect your accounts make a bigger difference than most people realize.

Strong Passwords: Your First Lock

A strong password mixes uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, and is at least 12 characters long โ€” the longer and more random, the harder it is to guess. Hackers often use "password cracking" programs that try millions of common words and number combinations per second, so a password like "iloveDOGS99" is much weaker than a random phrase like "Bl3u-Kite-Runs-Fast!". Using a different password for every account also matters: if one website is hacked and your password leaks, a reused password would let hackers into your other accounts too.

Firewalls: The Digital Wall

A firewall is a program or device that checks all the information trying to enter or leave a computer or network, blocking anything that looks suspicious โ€” much like a security guard checking IDs at a building entrance. Firewalls have been protecting computer networks since the late 1980s, when companies first started connecting their internal networks to the early internet and needed a way to keep unwanted visitors out. Today, most computers and phones have a firewall built in and turned on automatically, quietly blocking thousands of unwanted connection attempts every day.

VPNs: A Private Tunnel

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, creates an encrypted "tunnel" between your device and the internet, so anyone trying to spy on your connection โ€” like on public WiFi at a coffee shop or airport โ€” sees only scrambled, unreadable data instead of your actual activity. Businesses have used VPNs since the 1990s to let employees safely connect to their office network from home. Families sometimes use a VPN when traveling to keep banking or school logins private on hotel or airport WiFi, which is often unsecured.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Even a strong password can be stolen. Two-factor authentication adds a second lock โ€” after typing your password, the site sends a one-time code to your phone or email that you must also enter. This means a hacker who steals your password still can't get in without your phone too.
