Walk in Their Shoes: The First Step of Designing for People

In the 1990s, OXO designed a vegetable peeler for a woman named Betsey Farber, who had arthritis and struggled to grip her old thin metal peeler. Instead of guessing what she needed, the designers watched her cook, asked questions, and even tried peeling vegetables with hands wrapped in tape to simulate her joint pain. The result -- the Good Grips peeler with its soft, fat handle -- became one of the best-selling kitchen tools in the world, used by millions of people who don't have arthritis at all. That's the power of empathy in design.

Design Thinking Starts With People, Not Products

The design thinking framework, popularized by the design firm IDEO and Stanford's d.school, has five stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. Empathize comes first for a reason -- if you skip it, you risk designing a beautiful solution to a problem nobody actually has. Industrial designers who skip empathy often build products that look impressive in a portfolio but fail in the real world because they solved the WRONG problem.

Three Real Techniques for Building Empathy

1. Interviews: asking open-ended questions like 'walk me through the last time you used this' rather than yes/no questions that lead the person toward an answer you already expected. 2. Observation: watching someone use a product in their actual environment, not a showroom. Designers call this 'contextual inquiry' -- people often do workarounds they don't even mention in interviews because they've stopped noticing them. 3. Immersion: physically experiencing a constraint, like the OXO team taping their hands to simulate arthritis, or a hospital-equipment designer spending a night in a hospital bed to feel what patients feel.

A Real Constraint: The Wheelchair Curb Cut

Curb cuts -- the small ramps at street corners -- were added to sidewalks after disability advocates demonstrated the real difficulty of crossing streets in a wheelchair. Today, curb cuts also help parents with strollers, delivery workers with hand trucks, and travelers with rolling luggage. This is called the 'curb-cut effect': designing empathetically for one group often helps far more people than expected.

Conduct a 5-Question Empathy Interview

Choose a real object someone in your household uses often (a can opener, a backpack, a phone case). Interview that person with 5 open-ended questions, such as 'Tell me about the last time this frustrated you' or 'Walk me through how you normally use this.' Write down their answers, then list 2 problems you noticed that a redesign could solve.
