Meeting New People
Meeting someone new — at school, at a party, at the playground — can feel a little scary. The good news? Almost everyone feels that way too. The other kid is probably hoping someone will say hi to them! When you take the first step, you make their day easier — and yours.
Three simple keys. (1) SMILE — it tells them you're friendly. (2) SAY HI and your name. ("Hi! I'm Maya.") (3) ASK A QUESTION. ("What's your name?" or "Want to play with us?" or "What grade are you in?"). Listen to their answer. Most conversations start with a smile and one question.
You see a new kid at recess sitting alone. What's a kind way to meet them?
It's OK if a conversation feels awkward at first. That's normal! Don't worry about saying the perfect thing. Just be yourself. If they don't want to talk right now, that's OK too — try someone else. The more you practice, the easier it gets.
Hello Practice
This week, say a friendly "hi" to someone you don't usually talk to (a classmate, a neighbor, a kid at the park). Smile. Ask one question. See what happens!
Every friendship in your life started with a "hi." Saying hello is one of the most useful skills you'll ever learn.
