When a recipe says to "add" 2 cups of flour, everyone knows what to do. But in math class, words like "sum," "product," and "difference" all describe specific operations โ€” and mixing them up is one of the most common reasons students get word problems wrong, even when they know how to do the math itself. A variable is a letter that stands in for an unknown number, like x or n. An expression is a math phrase with numbers, variables, and operations but no equals sign, like 3x + 5. An equation is a statement that two expressions are equal, using an equals sign, like 3x + 5 = 20. The difference matters: you can simplify an expression, but you solve an equation to find the variable's value. For 3x + 5 = 20, subtracting 5 from both sides gives 3x = 15, and dividing both sides by 3 gives x = 5.

Common Mix-Up

Students often confuse "the difference of 8 and 3" (which is 8 - 3 = 5) with just subtracting in whatever order feels natural. Order matters in subtraction and division, so always subtract or divide in the order the words describe: first number, then second number.

Translating Words into Math

Word problems are really just math sentences in disguise. "Five more than a number" translates to n + 5. "Three less than a number" translates to n - 3 (not 3 - n!). "Twice a number" translates to 2n. Learning to translate accurately is the single biggest skill for solving word problems correctly.
