What Kind of Number Is It? Sorting Evens, Odds, and Primes

Take the number 17. Is it even or odd? Is it prime or composite? Is it a one-digit or two-digit number? A single number can belong to several different groups at once, depending on which rule you use to sort it. Mathematicians call this sorting "classification," and it's one of the most useful tools for finding patterns in numbers and shapes.

Even or Odd? The Last-Digit Trick

A number is even if it can be split into two equal whole-number groups with nothing left over -- like 8 cookies split into two plates of 4. A number is odd if one is left over, like 9 cookies split into 4 and 5. You don't need to check the whole number to know: just look at the last digit. If it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, the number is even. If it ends in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9, it's odd. This works even for huge numbers -- 4,829,356 is even because it ends in 6, without you ever needing to divide the whole thing.

Prime Numbers: Only Two Factors

A prime number has exactly two factors: 1 and itself. The number 7 is prime because the only whole numbers that multiply to make 7 are 1 x 7 -- nothing else works. The number 8 is not prime (it's called composite) because it has more factors: 1, 2, 4, and 8. The number 2 is the only even prime number, because every other even number can always be divided by 2, giving it a third factor. Mathematicians have been hunting for large primes for centuries -- as of 2018, the largest known prime number had over 24 million digits.

Quick Prime Test

To check if a number under 100 is prime, you only need to test dividing it by 2, 3, 5, and 7. If none of those divide evenly, it's prime! That's because the next prime, 11, times itself is already over 100.

Sorting With a Venn Diagram

Sometimes a number belongs to more than one group. Take the numbers 2, 4, 9, 11, 15, and 21. Sort them by even/odd in one circle and prime/composite in another circle. The number 2 lands in both the "even" and "prime" overlap -- it's the only number in that overlap out of these six! Classification like this helps scientists too: biologists sort animals by traits like "has fur" and "lays eggs," and a platypus famously lands in an overlap most mammals don't.
