Body Mechanics: Making a Character Feel Its Weight
Watch a person lift a heavy box. Before they even move it, their knees bend, their back braces, and they lean back to counter the load. Now picture a cartoon lifting a box that looks heavy but floats up like a balloon - it feels fake instantly. Your brain knows what weight looks like, even if you can't explain it. Body mechanics is the animation of believable physical movement: how weight shifts, how balance is kept, and how force travels through a body. Nail it and your character feels alive. Miss it and viewers feel that something is off, even if they can't say why.

Center of Gravity and Balance
A body stays balanced as long as its center of gravity (roughly around the hips) stays above its base of support (the area under the feet). Lean too far and you must either take a step or fall. Animators use this constantly. When a character reaches for something high, their hips shift back to stay balanced. When they carry a bucket in one hand, they lean away from it. If you forget this, characters look like they're floating on ice.
Weight Shift Is the Secret of the Walk
A walk is really a controlled fall. You lean forward, start to topple, and catch yourself with the next step. Your weight rocks from one foot to the other, and the hips dip and rise with each stride. Pixar animators often exaggerate this hip sway and the up-down 'bounce' to sell the weight of the body. To test your own animation, ask: at every frame, which foot is carrying the weight? If the answer is unclear, the walk will look mushy.
Anticipation, Overlap, and Follow-Through
Real force builds up and dies down; it doesn't snap on and off. Before a big jump, a character CROUCHES - that's anticipation. As they land, softer body parts (hair, a coat, a belly) keep moving after the main body stops - that's overlapping action and follow-through. These principles come from the classic '12 Principles of Animation' defined by Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. Skip them and motion looks robotic; use them and it looks like it obeys real physics.
Before animating a lift or a jump, physically do the action yourself (or film a friend). Feel where your weight shifts and where you brace. Your body already knows the mechanics - copy them.

Animate a Weight Lift
1. Film yourself (or a partner) lifting something genuinely heavy, like a backpack full of books. 2. Scrub the video and screenshot 6-8 key poses: the reach, the brace, the strain, the lift, the recovery. 3. Draw those poses as thumbnails, marking where the center of gravity sits over the feet in each. 4. Animate a short 3-second clip (hand-drawn or in software like Blender) hitting those key poses. Deliverable: your thumbnail sheet plus the 3-second animation showing a clear, believable weight shift.
