Fallingwater: How One House Redefined What Architecture Could Be
In 1935, architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed a house that does something almost no architect had dared before: it cantilevers directly out over a waterfall in rural Pennsylvania, so the Kaufmann family who lived there could hear the falls rushing beneath their living room floor. Structural engineers who reviewed Wright's plans warned that the concrete slabs were unsafe. They were partly right โ the cantilevers sagged nearly 7 inches over the following decades, and in 2002 engineers had to install steel post-tensioning cables just to keep the house from collapsing. Fallingwater is one of the best case studies for learning how to critique a building, because its beauty and its real structural flaws exist side by side.

Form: What the Eye Sees
Form is about visual and sensory qualities: shape, material, and how a building sits in space. Fallingwater's most striking feature is its stack of horizontal concrete 'trays' that echo the flat sandstone ledges of the streambed just below it. Wright used local sandstone for the vertical walls and chimney, so the building seems to rise directly out of the rock rather than being set down on top of it.
Function: Does It Work as a House?
Function asks how well a building actually serves the people using it. Here Fallingwater gets mixed reviews: the constant moisture from the waterfall caused chronic dampness and mold problems, and the interior rooms are famously small and dim compared to their dramatic exterior. Wright intended this โ small, cozy interior rooms were meant to push residents outward onto the wide cantilevered terraces to experience the forest and water directly. It is a case where 'function' was defined by Wright's philosophy of organic architecture, not simply by comfort.
Context: Reading a Building Against Its Site
Context means how a building relates to the land, climate, and surroundings around it. Many of Wright's contemporaries working in the International Style were designing steel-and-glass boxes that looked the same whether they sat in a desert or a city, largely ignoring their specific site. Fallingwater does the opposite: its cantilevers physically extend the rock ledges beneath it, and the whole design would be meaningless anywhere except exactly on that stream, over that waterfall.
