Learn to Count Paradigm Shifts

A paradigm shift is a fundamental change in how a field thinks. From Ptolemaic (Earth-centered) to Copernican (Sun-centered). From Newtonian to Einsteins relativity. From classical to quantum physics. Paradigm shifts recast everything. In counting, moving from tallies to Hindu-Arabic numerals was one.

The Core Idea

Thomas Kuhn coined "paradigm shift" in 1962. Science usually works within a paradigm (normal science), then accumulates anomalies (things that dont fit), then a revolutionary new paradigm replaces it. Current possible shifts in counting: from classical to quantum, from statistical to causal, from narrow AI to general AI.

Examples

From geocentrism to heliocentrism (1500s). From alchemy to chemistry (1700s). From classical to quantum physics (1900s). From arithmetic to computational counting (1950s). From batch data to real-time streams (2010s). Each shift transformed its field.

Paradigm shifts are often resisted. Galileo was punished for advocating heliocentrism. Boltzmann was ridiculed for statistical mechanics (and later killed himself). Shifting paradigms requires courage. But eventually the new paradigm wins because it explains more.
