Battlefield Forensics: What Skeletons Reveal About Medieval Combat

In 1996, construction workers near Towton, England, uncovered a mass grave holding the remains of 38 men killed in a single afternoon: the Battle of Towton, fought in a snowstorm on Palm Sunday, 1461, during the Wars of the Roses. Reading Wounds: What Bones Tell Us

Forensic osteoarchaeologists classify skeletal trauma into three categories: sharp-force (clean cuts from swords or axes), blunt-force (crushing fractures from maces or war hammers), and penetrating (narrow puncture wounds from arrows or bill hooks). At Towton, researchers found that most fatal wounds were concentrated on the left side of the skull and the back of the head โ€” evidence that many men were killed while fleeing, struck from behind or by a right-handed attacker facing them. Fewer than 30% of the wounds matched sword injuries; most were consistent with polearms like halberds and bills, weapons chronicles rarely mention as the real killers of the battlefield.

The Visby Armor: Frozen in the Moment of Death

At the Battle of Visby in 1361, on the Swedish island of Gotland, a poorly trained peasant militia was slaughtered by a professional Danish army. Because the defenders were buried quickly, in the summer heat, still wearing their armor, archaeologists in the 1900s excavated skeletons still inside coats of mail โ€” some with the fatal weapon wound preserved exactly where it pierced the metal rings. One skeleton shows a crossbow bolt that punched clean through mail and bone. The Visby graves are considered the best-preserved direct evidence of how medieval armor actually performed against real weapons, rather than how manuals claimed it should.

Why This Matters

Medieval chronicles were often written by clergy or nobles who had never fought and who wanted to glorify (or shame) one side. Skeletal evidence doesn't have an agenda โ€” a fracture pattern is a fracture pattern โ€” which is why forensic archaeology has overturned long-accepted stories about several famous medieval battles.

Beyond Bones: Reconstructing the Whole Battlefield

Battlefield archaeologists don't stop at skeletons. At Bosworth Field (1485), metal detectorists mapped over 30 lead cannonballs and shot across a wide area, which let researchers relocate the actual site of the battle to a spot more than a mile from where historians had assumed it took place for 500 years. Soil chemistry can reveal mass grave locations even after bones have decayed, and the spacing of arrowhead finds can show where archers stood and in what formation.
