Digging a Tell: How Mudbrick Cities Became Hills

Fly over southern Iraq and you will spot strange flat-topped hills rising from the plain. They are not natural. Each one is a buried city โ€” sometimes 30 meters tall โ€” built entirely out of mud. The mound of ancient Uruk covers more than 400 hectares and holds over 5,000 years of stacked human life. These mounds are called 'tells,' and learning to read one is how archaeologists reconstructed the world's first cities.

A Land of Mud, Not Stone

The plains between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers had rich soil but almost no building stone and few large trees. What they had in endless supply was mud. So people mixed river clay with straw, pressed it into wooden molds, and dried the bricks in the fierce sun. Sun-dried mudbrick is cheap and easy to make, but it has a weakness: rain, floods, and time slowly dissolve it back into mud. A mudbrick house might last only a generation or two before its walls slumped.

How a City Turns Into a Hill

Here is the key idea. When a mudbrick building collapsed or was abandoned, people rarely hauled the rubble away. Instead they flattened the debris and built a NEW house right on top. Over centuries, layer piled on layer, and the whole settlement slowly rose above the surrounding plain. That growing mound is a tell (from an Arabic word for 'hill'). The city of Uruk, home of the legendary King Gilgamesh, sits on such a mound. Every generation of building raised the ground a little higher.

Why the oldest layers are on the bottom

Because each new city was built on top of the old one, the DEEPEST layers of a tell are the OLDEST. Digging down through a tell is like traveling backward in time, one collapsed city at a time.

Reading the Layers: Stratigraphy

Archaeologists study these stacked layers using stratigraphy โ€” the study of layers (strata) and their order. Each layer, or stratum, represents a period of time. By carefully digging down and recording exactly which layer each object came from, archaeologists can tell which pots, tools, and tablets are older and which are younger. For example, at Uruk the lower layers hold plain early pottery, while higher layers contain clay tablets with the world's first writing โ€” cuneiform, from around 3200 BCE. The position in the tell proves the writing came LATER than the plain pottery below it.

Why did Mesopotamians build mainly with mudbrick?

Worked example: an archaeologist digs a trench into a tell and finds, from top to bottom: (1) a coin near the surface, (2) a cuneiform tablet in the middle, (3) plain undecorated pots at the bottom. Using stratigraphy, she knows the plain pots are the OLDEST because they lie deepest, the tablet is younger, and the coin is the most recent โ€” the order is fixed by the layers, even before any lab dating.

Dig carefully, record everything

Because a layer's DEPTH is the clue to its age, archaeologists dig slowly and write down exactly where every object was found. Yank an object out without recording its layer and you destroy the very information that tells its age.

Build and Read Your Own Tell

In a clear cup or jar, create a model tell: press in a layer of one color of clay or playdough, drop in a small 'artifact' (a bead, a paper scrap), then add a different-colored layer on top with another artifact, and repeat for 3-4 layers. Then write a short field note answering: Which artifact is oldest and how do you know? What does each layer represent? Deliverable: your layered cup plus a labeled field note explaining the order using the word 'stratigraphy.'
