Holistic Management Grazing: How Cows Can Heal the Land
In the 1960s, wildlife biologist Allan Savory watched huge herds of grazing animals in Africa keep grasslands lush and healthy โ while land where animals had been removed to "protect" it turned to bare, cracked desert. That paradox launched an idea that is now used on ranches across six continents: livestock, moved the right way, can rebuild soil instead of destroying it.

The Problem With Set-and-Forget Grazing
When cattle are left on the same field for months, they develop favorite spots. They eat the tastiest grasses down to the roots again and again, never letting them recover, while ignoring less-tasty plants that grow tall, go to seed, and choke out everything else. Bare soil gets exposed to sun and wind, and without living roots holding it together, it erodes. Over decades this is how millions of acres of former grassland become desert.
Mimicking the Herd, Predator, and Move
On the African savanna, herds of wildebeest and buffalo bunch tightly because of predators, graze an area hard for a short burst, trample old dead grass into the soil, fertilize it heavily with dung and urine, and then move on โ not returning for months. That trample-and-move pattern is exactly what Holistic Planned Grazing recreates with fencing (often portable electric fence) instead of lions.
The Four-Step Grazing Cycle
1. Divide pasture into small paddocks using portable fencing. 2. Pack animals densely into one paddock for 1-3 days โ long enough to graze and trample, short enough that plants aren't eaten twice. 3. Move the herd to the next paddock, letting the grazed paddock rest. 4. Rest each paddock 30-90+ days depending on rainfall, until grass has fully regrown roots before animals return.
A 2018 study of ranches using planned grazing in the U.S. Southern Plains found 6-14% more soil organic carbon than neighboring continuously grazed land โ carbon that came from deeper, healthier root systems built during rest periods.
Ranchers using this method WANT animals to trample about a third of the grass into the ground uneaten. That trampled plant matter becomes mulch that shades soil, holds moisture, and feeds microbes โ it's not wasted, it's compost happening in real time.

Design a Paddock Rotation
On paper, sketch a 4-acre pasture divided into 4 equal paddocks (1 acre each). Assume a herd grazes one paddock for 2 days, then rotates. Write out a 16-day rotation schedule showing which paddock is grazed on which days, and calculate how many rest days each paddock gets before the herd returns to it. Label which paddock would be greenest on day 16 and explain why.
Holistic grazing fails if paddocks are grazed too long or rested too little โ it takes careful planning and monitoring, not just "more animals, more often." Poorly managed intensive grazing can still degrade land.
