Around the year 800 CE, something unusual happened across Scandinavia: summers got noticeably warmer and longer. Historians call this stretch, lasting roughly from 800 to 1300 CE, the Medieval Warm Period. For Norse farmers scratching out a living on thin, rocky soil at the edge of the Arctic Circle, a few extra frost-free weeks each year meant more hay for cattle, better barley harvests, and โ critically โ safer seas for sailing. The Viking Age did not begin in a vacuum. It began when climate, technology, and opportunity lined up at the same time.

A Longer Growing Season Meant More People
Scandinavia in the 8th century had limited farmland โ most of Norway is mountains and fjords, and Sweden's north is subarctic. When average temperatures rose by an estimated 1 to 2 degrees Celsius during the Medieval Warm Period, the growing season lengthened by several weeks. Barley and rye could now be grown farther north and at higher elevations than before. More food meant more surviving children, and within a few generations Scandinavia had a population it could no longer feed on its existing land. Younger sons, who inherited nothing under Norse law, had a strong incentive to look overseas.
Warmer Seas, Safer Voyages
Climate did not just grow more food โ it opened the ocean. Reduced sea ice in the North Atlantic during the warm period meant fewer icebergs and a longer sailing season, from roughly April through October instead of just a few summer weeks. Combined with the newly developed longship โ a shallow-draft vessel with a flexible hull that could handle open ocean swells and still be rowed up rivers โ Norse sailors could reach Shetland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland with far less risk. Iceland was settled starting around 874 CE, during exactly this favorable stretch.
Tree-ring and ice-core data from Greenland show the Medieval Warm Period peaked with temperatures close to today's levels, before a sharp cooling after 1300 CE. That cooling โ the Little Ice Age โ dropped average temperatures by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius and choked shipping lanes with sea ice for centuries.
Greenland: A Colony Climate Made and Unmade
Erik the Red founded the Eastern and Western Settlements in Greenland around 985 CE, during the height of the warm period. Norse Greenlanders raised cattle and sheep on grass that would not grow there today. But by the 1300s, as the Little Ice Age set in, growing seasons shortened, sea ice blocked trade routes to Norway, and hay yields collapsed. Archaeological evidence โ including skeletons showing signs of malnutrition โ suggests the Western Settlement was abandoned by around 1350, and the Eastern Settlement followed by the early 1400s. Climate that enabled Viking expansion also helped end one of its most ambitious colonies.
