The Magic Word: Lift
Look closely at an airplane wing and you'll notice something special: the top is curved and the bottom is flatter. When the plane moves forward, air has to travel over that curved top and under the flatter bottom at the same time. The air moving over the curved top has to speed up, and fast-moving air pushes less hard than slow-moving air. That difference in push creates an upward force called lift, and lift is what carries the plane into the sky.
Four Forces That Help a Plane Fly
Every airplane in the sky is being pulled and pushed by four forces at once. Lift pushes the plane up, and weight (gravity) pulls it back down. Thrust โ made by the engines โ pushes the plane forward, and drag โ the air rubbing against the plane โ pushes back and slows it down. Think of pushing a friend on a swing: your push is like thrust, and the air resistance slowing the swing down is like drag. When lift is stronger than weight, and thrust is stronger than drag, the plane flies!
On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright flew the very first powered airplane for just 12 seconds and 120 feet โ shorter than a football field. Today, planes fly nonstop for over 17 hours!

Parts of an Airplane
Every airplane has key parts that work together. The wings create lift and often hold the engines. The engines make thrust to push the plane forward. The tail, at the back, has small movable pieces that help the pilot steer and keep the plane steady. The cockpit at the front is where the pilot sits and controls the whole airplane.

Paper Airplane Flight Test
Fold a paper airplane and throw it five times, measuring how far it flies each time with a tape measure or by counting footsteps. Then fold the wings into a slightly different shape (wider, narrower, or angled) and test it five more times. Record both sets of distances and write one sentence explaining which design created more lift and why.
