Arches, Domes, and Towers: What Makes Buildings Stand Up

The Colosseum in Rome has 80 arches that have held up stone walls for nearly 2,000 years โ€” older than your great-great-great-grandparents by a very long stretch! Architects figured out amazing shapes that make structures strong. Today you will explore three of the coolest ones.

What Is Architecture?

Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings. An architect plans how a building looks, how strong it is, and how people move around inside. Before any brick is laid, an architect draws a plan โ€” like a map for a building. Buildings need to hold up their own weight AND the weight of the people and things inside them. That is where clever shapes come in!

Arches: A Shape That Pushes Sideways

An arch is a curved shape like a rainbow. When weight pushes down on the top of an arch, the arch spreads that weight out to both sides. The sides push back against the weight and hold everything up. The Romans used arches to build bridges, aqueducts, and stadiums. You can spot arches in doorways, windows, and bridges every day.

Try It!

Make an arch with your hands: curve them together fingertip to fingertip. Now push down gently on the top. Feel how your hands push out to the sides? That is exactly how a real arch works!

Domes: Roofs Like Upside-Down Bowls

A dome is like an arch that goes all the way around in a circle โ€” a 3D arch, like a bowl flipped upside down. The dome of the Pantheon in Rome is 142 feet across and was the biggest dome in the world for over 1,300 years! The weight spreads out from the center in all directions, making it incredibly stable. You can find domes on capitol buildings, churches, and sports stadiums.

Towers: Going High by Going Narrow

A tower is a very tall, narrow structure. Towers are strong because they have a wide base at the bottom and get narrower toward the top. This keeps the center of gravity โ€” the balancing point โ€” low and steady. The Eiffel Tower in Paris is 1,083 feet tall but only 410 feet wide at the base, and it has been standing since 1889! Engineers use triangles inside towers because triangles cannot be squished out of shape the way squares can.
