See-Through Screens: How Augmented Reality Adds Pictures to the Real World
Hold up a tablet at a picture in a book, and suddenly a dinosaur pops up on the screen, standing right on your kitchen table! That is augmented reality, or AR. It does not take you to a pretend world. Instead, it adds new pictures on top of the real world you can already see.

AR Adds, It Does Not Replace
Virtual reality (VR) covers your eyes completely and shows you a brand new pretend place, like a cave or outer space. Augmented reality is different: it keeps you looking at your real room, real yard, or real book, and adds extra pictures on top, like a friendly cartoon animal sitting on your real couch. AR = Add. VR = Vanish into a new world.
How the Camera and Screen Work Together
A phone or tablet's camera looks at the real world and sends that picture to the screen, just like a video call. Then, special AR software studies the picture to find flat surfaces, like a floor or table. Once it finds a flat spot, it draws a 3D picture, like a cartoon puppy, right on top of that spot on your screen. Move the tablet around, and the puppy stays sitting in that same real spot, because the software keeps tracking where the floor is.
AR You Might Already Know
Some phone camera filters that put animal ears or crowns on your face use AR to track your face shape. Some furniture apps let you point your phone at your empty room and see what a couch would look like before you buy it. Some museum apps let you point your phone at a dinosaur skeleton and see what the dinosaur looked like alive, moving right next to the bones.
AR needs light to see the real world clearly through the camera. In a very dark room, AR pictures might wobble or disappear because the software can't find the floor or walls anymore.

Design Your Own AR Idea
Draw a picture of a room in your house. Then draw one AR object you would add on top of it (a cartoon pet, a floating game, a helpful robot). Label where the camera would need to 'see' (the floor, a wall, or a table) for your AR object to stay in place.
