One-of-a-Kind: How a Computer Can Prove a Picture Is Really Yours

Imagine you draw a picture of a purple dinosaur. Your friend can take a photo of it on their phone in one second! But there is only ONE real first drawing you made. Computers have a special way to keep track of which one came first โ€” even when copies are everywhere.

A Copy Is Not the Same as the Real One

If you make a paper airplane and your friend makes one that looks exactly the same, you still each have YOUR OWN airplane. But on the internet, pictures are extra tricky, because anyone can copy a picture perfectly, forever, for free, in one click. So grown-ups who build computer systems had to invent a way to say: "This ONE picture, right here, belongs to this ONE person" โ€” even though a hundred copies of it might be floating around online.

The Class List That Never Gets Erased

Picture your teacher's class list, where every new student who joins gets added to the bottom, and nobody is EVER allowed to erase a name once it's written. Computers can keep a list just like that โ€” it's called a LEDGER. Every time someone says "I own this picture now," that gets added to the bottom of the ledger, forever, where thousands of computers around the world can see it and agree it's true. Because so many computers keep a copy of the same ledger, nobody can sneak in and change an old entry โ€” everyone else's copy would catch the trick right away.

Every Picture Gets Its Own Fingerprint

Just like your fingerprint is different from everyone else's, a computer can turn any picture into a special code made of letters and numbers, called a HASH. Even changing one single tiny pixel in a picture creates a totally different hash. That's how the ledger tells two pictures apart, even if they look almost identical to your eyes.

Grown-ups call one-of-a-kind digital items an NFT, which stands for "non-fungible token." Non-fungible just means "can't be swapped and still be the same thing" โ€” like your one real drawing versus a photocopy of it.
