Maps and Globes

A MAP is a picture of a place from ABOVE. A GLOBE is a round model of the whole Earth. Both help us know where things are. Learning to read them is a SUPERPOWER. Knights, pirates, explorers, and presidents have all used maps to do amazing things.

What's on a Map?

Maps usually have:\n\n- **TITLE** — what this map shows ("US States")\n- **KEY/LEGEND** — explains the symbols\n- **COMPASS ROSE** — shows N, S, E, W (North, South, East, West)\n- **SCALE** — how big real life is compared to the map\n- **SYMBOLS** — pictures for cities, rivers, mountains\n- **LABELS** — names of places

Directions on a Map

The COMPASS ROSE shows directions:\n\n- **NORTH (N)** — up on most maps\n- **SOUTH (S)** — down\n- **EAST (E)** — right\n- **WEST (W)** — left\n\nMemory trick: **N**ever **E**at **S**oggy **W**affles (N-E-S-W going clockwise).\n\nOr think: the SUN RISES in the EAST and SETS in the WEST. Those are real directions!

What's on a Globe

A GLOBE is round — like Earth. It shows:\n\n- **7 CONTINENTS**: North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, Antarctica\n- **5 OCEANS**: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, Southern\n- **EQUATOR** — imaginary line around the middle\n- **NORTH POLE** — top (Arctic, home to polar bears)\n- **SOUTH POLE** — bottom (Antarctica, home to penguins)\n\nGlobes show Earth's true shape. Flat maps are stretched and slightly wrong because Earth is round.

How many continents are there?

Types of Maps

Different maps show different things:\n\n- **POLITICAL maps** — countries and borders\n- **PHYSICAL maps** — mountains, rivers, forests\n- **ROAD maps** — streets and highways\n- **WEATHER maps** — rain, snow, temperature\n- **TREASURE maps** (in pirate stories!) — where the loot is hidden\n\nWhen you need to find something, pick the RIGHT kind of map.

How to Use a Map

1. Read the TITLE — what does this map show?\n2. Find the KEY — what do the symbols mean?\n3. Use the COMPASS ROSE to figure out direction.\n4. Find your STARTING POINT and GOAL.\n5. Trace the path with your finger.\n\nWith practice, reading maps becomes as easy as reading words.

On MOST maps, which direction is UP?

🎯

Map Your Bedroom

1. Draw your bedroom from ABOVE (like you're looking down from the ceiling).\n2. Add your bed, dresser, door, window.\n3. Add a compass rose.\n4. Make a KEY: "B = bed, D = dresser, W = window."\n5. Congratulations — you made a MAP!

🎯

Globe Quiz

1. Find a globe (library, classroom, or online).\n2. Find your country.\n3. Find the 7 continents.\n4. Find the 5 oceans.\n5. Find the Equator and both poles.\n6. Spin the globe — where would YOU like to visit? Find it on the globe!

Which OCEAN is the BIGGEST?
