Snappy, Sparkly, Squishy: Finding Juicy Words for Your Story

'The dog was big.' Boring! 'The GIANT, slobbery dog bounced like a furry beach ball!' Now THAT'S a sentence you can picture. Today we hunt for juicy words โ€” the kind that make readers see, hear, and feel your story instead of just reading it.

What You'll Learn

- Why some words paint a picture and some words don't - Three juicy words to replace 'big,' 'good,' and 'said' - How one juicy word can change a whole sentence - How to pick your own juicy words for a story

Tired Words vs. Juicy Words

Some words get used SO much they go flat, like soda left open overnight. 'Big,' 'good,' 'nice,' and 'said' are tired words. They're not wrong โ€” they're just plain. Juicy words are their exciting cousins: - Instead of big: enormous, gigantic, towering - Instead of good: wonderful, dazzling, delicious - Instead of said: whispered, shouted, giggled

The Picture Test

Say your sentence out loud. Can you SEE it happening in your head like a tiny movie? If not, swap in a juicier word and try again.

One Word Changes Everything

Look what happens to the same sentence with different verbs for 'said': 'I'm not scared,' Max said. (flat โ€” we don't know how Max feels) 'I'm not scared,' Max whispered. (now Max seems nervous!) 'I'm not scared,' Max shouted. (now Max seems brave and loud!) Same words, totally different feeling โ€” just from one juicy verb.

Which sentence uses the JUICIEST words to describe a puppy?

โ“

In the sentence 'I'm not scared,' Max whispered โ€” what does the word 'whispered' tell us that 'said' does not?

Juicy Word Swap

Take a short paragraph you've already written (or write 3 new sentences about your favorite animal). Circle every tired word (big, good, nice, said, fun). Replace each one with a juicier word from a list your teacher gives you or one you invent. Read your 'juicy' version out loud to a partner and ask them what picture they saw in their head.
