Fact or Feeling? Telling What's True from What You Think
Here are two sentences: 'This dog has four legs.' and 'This dog is the cutest dog ever!' The first one you can CHECK. Count the legs: 1, 2, 3, 4. It is a FACT. Everybody who counts will get the same answer. The second one is a FEELING, also called an opinion. You might think the dog is cutest. Your friend might think a cat is cuter. Nobody is wrong! Feelings can be different for different people.

A Fact Can Be Checked
A fact is something you can look at, count, or measure to find out if it is true. 'The sky is up.' You can look. True! 'There are 5 apples in the bowl.' You can count. Check! 'Ice is cold.' You can touch it. Brrr, true! Facts stay the same no matter who checks them.
When someone tells you something, ask: 'How do you know?' If they can show you or you can check it, it is probably a fact. If they say 'I just like it that way,' it is a feeling!
A Feeling Can Be Different
A feeling or opinion is what someone thinks or likes. It can be different for each person, and that is okay. 'Blue is the best color.' Maybe for you! Your friend might love red. 'Broccoli is yucky.' Some kids love broccoli! When we hear words like 'best,' 'yummy,' 'yucky,' or 'prettiest,' that is a clue we are hearing a feeling, not a fact.

Fact or Feeling Hunt
1. Walk around your room with a grown-up. 2. Say one FACT about something you see (like 'The chair has four legs'). 3. Then say one FEELING about it (like 'This chair is comfy'). 4. Do this for three things. 5. Draw a happy face next to your feelings and a checkmark next to your facts on a piece of paper!
