How Do Drones Fly?
A delivery drone usually has four spinning propellers, one at each corner. Each propeller pushes air downward, and that push creates an upward force called lift. When all four propellers spin at just the right speed, the drone lifts straight up off the ground, like a tiny elevator in the sky.
From Warehouse to Your Porch
A delivery drone's journey starts at a warehouse, where a package is clipped underneath it. The drone flies a path already mapped out by GPS, the same kind of satellite system your family's car might use for directions. When it reaches your house, it hovers low, gently lowers the package on a small cord, and releases it - then flies back to the warehouse for the next delivery.
What Can Stop a Drone Mid-Flight?
Strong wind can push a drone off its path, so drones check weather before taking off. Low battery is another risk - drones only carry enough power for one round trip, so engineers calculate the exact flight time needed before launch. That's why you won't see delivery drones flying during a thunderstorm!
Delivery drones must fly below a certain height and stay away from airports so they never get near airplanes or helicopters. Engineers program 'no-fly zones' directly into the drone's GPS map to keep the sky safe for everyone.

Build a Lift Demonstration
Cut four small paper or cardboard 'blades' shaped like mini propeller fins. Attach them at an angle to a pencil or straw using tape, forming a pinwheel shape. Hold the straw between your palms and rub your hands together quickly to spin it, or blow air across the blades. Observe and record which blade angle makes the pinwheel spin fastest and explain how that spinning would push air downward on a real drone.
