How Drones Fly Together: Learning from Starling Flocks

Have you ever seen a huge flock of birds in the sky, all turning and swooping at exactly the same time? This is called a murmuration. Thousands of starlings fly together like one giant swirling cloud โ€” and not one bird is the leader. Drone engineers watched murmurations and thought: what if we could make drones do that? In 2017, Intel flew 1,218 drones at the same time during a Super Bowl halftime show, painting pictures in the sky without a single crash.

How Do Starlings Know What to Do?

Each starling only watches the 7 birds closest to it. That is it! No bird gives orders. Each bird follows three simple rules: 1. SEPARATION: Do not get too close to your neighbors โ€” give them space. 2. ALIGNMENT: Turn the same direction your neighbors are turning. 3. COHESION: Do not drift too far away โ€” stick with the group. When thousands of birds each follow these three rules at the same time, the whole flock moves like one giant creature. Scientists call this EMERGENT BEHAVIOR โ€” when simple rules create amazing complex patterns that nobody planned.

Why 7 Neighbors?

Scientists used special cameras to film murmurations and count exactly which birds each starling was watching. Every bird watched its 7 nearest neighbors โ€” not 5, not 10, but 7. This number gives the perfect balance: react fast enough to danger while staying connected to the group.

Drone Swarms: Robots Flying Like Birds

A drone swarm is a group of drones that fly together as a team. Each drone has: - A tiny computer (smaller than your thumb!) - A radio that talks to nearby drones - Sensors that measure distance to neighbors Just like starlings, each drone follows simple rules: do not crash into neighbors, keep up with the group, and do your job (shine a light, take a photo, search an area). Intel's drone shows use special software called choreography. A human programs the pattern ahead of time โ€” for example, make a heart shape at 8:00 pm. Then the swarm follows the plan automatically, each drone flying to its own assigned spot in the sky.

Why Swarms Are Useful

A swarm of small drones can do things one big drone cannot: - Search a huge area quickly โ€” 100 drones cover 100 times more ground at once - If one drone breaks, the rest keep working โ€” no single point of failure - Small drones fit through tight spaces, like inside a collapsed building to find survivors - They can carry one package together if it is too heavy for a single drone Scientists at Harvard University built a swarm of 1,024 tiny 'Kilobot' robots in 2014. Each Kilobot was the size of a quarter. Together they arranged themselves into star and letter shapes โ€” using only the same three rules: separation, alignment, cohesion.

Be the Swarm: A Movement Game

This works with 4 or more people โ€” try it with your family! 1. Clear a big open space in a room or outside. 2. Each person is a 'drone.' Remember your THREE rules: Rule 1 SEPARATION: Stay at arm's length from your nearest neighbor. Rule 2 ALIGNMENT: If your nearest neighbor turns, you turn the same way. Rule 3 COHESION: Do not walk away from the group on your own. 3. One person slowly starts walking in any direction. Everyone follows Rule 2 and gradually turns that way. 4. Test these things: What happens when one person speeds up? What if someone tries to walk away alone? What if two people walk toward each other? 5. Draw a picture of your swarm from above (bird's-eye view). Use arrows to show which direction each person was moving.
