How Electricity Travels in a Loop to Light Your Bulb

Have you ever flipped a light switch and wondered โ€” what just happened? One second it is dark, then click โ€” light! Electricity did that. It ran in a loop from the battery, through the wires, through the light bulb, and back. That loop has a special name. It is called a circuit.

Electricity Needs a Complete Road

Think of electricity like tiny cars zooming along a road. The cars need a complete road with no gaps and no missing pieces. In a circuit, the road is made of metal wires. Electricity travels through the wires from the battery, to the light bulb, and back to the battery again. If any part of the road is broken or missing โ€” snap! โ€” the cars stop. The light goes off. This is called an open circuit. When the road is complete and electricity can flow all the way around โ€” whoosh! โ€” the light turns on. This is called a closed circuit.

A Battery Is Like a Tiny Energy Push

A battery pushes electricity around the loop. One end of the battery is marked + (positive) and the other is marked - (negative). Electricity flows from the - end, all the way around the circuit, and back to the + end. If you flip the battery around, the electricity flows the other way!

The Three Parts of a Simple Circuit

Every simple circuit has three parts that must all be connected: 1. Battery โ€” gives electricity the push it needs to move around the loop. 2. Wires โ€” the path electricity travels along. Wires are usually made of copper metal inside a plastic cover. 3. Bulb โ€” the part that uses the electricity. The wire inside the bulb gets so hot from the electricity that it glows bright! Take away any one of these three parts and the circuit breaks. The light will not turn on no matter what.

Open vs. Closed: The Switch Does It All

A light switch is really just a gap-maker and a gap-filler. When you flip the switch OFF, you create a tiny gap in the wire. The circuit is open and electricity cannot jump across the gap. No loop means no light. When you flip it ON, you close the gap. The circuit is complete. Electricity zooms around the loop and the bulb lights up. That tiny flip of a plastic switch is controlling millions of tiny particles called electrons, all rushing through the wire at the same time!

Circuits Are Everywhere Around You

Once you know what a circuit is, you will spot them everywhere! A flashlight has a battery, wires, and a small bulb โ€” the sliding switch opens and closes the circuit. Your TV remote has a tiny circuit inside. Pressing a button closes a circuit that sends a signal. Holiday string lights are a long circuit with many bulbs connected in a row. If one bulb breaks and creates a gap, sometimes all the lights go out โ€” because the whole loop is broken!

Build a Coin Battery Circuit

You will need: 1 coin battery (CR2032 size), 1 small LED light (any color), and a small piece of tape. 1. Look at the LED. It has two metal legs. The longer leg is the + (positive) side and the shorter leg is the - (negative) side. 2. Place the longer leg of the LED on the flat shiny + side of the coin battery. 3. Place the shorter leg of the LED on the rough bottom - side of the coin battery. 4. Does the LED glow? If yes โ€” you made a complete circuit! 5. Now pull one leg away from the battery slightly. Does the light go out? That is an open circuit. 6. Touch the leg back. Does the light return? That is a closed circuit! 7. Use tape to hold both legs against the battery so the light stays on. You just built your first real circuit!
