Letter C Sounds and Words
C is a tricky letter with two sounds! Most of the time C says kuh (hard C, like in CAT, COW, CUP). But sometimes C says sss (soft C, like in CITY, CENT, CIRCLE). When C is followed by E, I, or Y, it usually sounds like sss.
The Core Idea
Uppercase C looks like an open mouth facing right. Lowercase c is just smaller. The letter C is special because it can copy the K sound (in cat) or the S sound (in city). The vowel right after C is a clue: a/o/u = hard C, e/i/y = soft C.
Words That Start with C
Hard C: Cat, Cow, Cup, Car, Candy, Cookie. Soft C: Cent, Cell, City, Circle, Circus, Celery. Notice the pattern: hard C is before a, o, u. Soft C is before e, i. Both are still the letter C.

Going Deeper
The letter C has two sounds because English borrowed words from Latin and French. Latin-based words like cellar use soft C. Older English words like cup use hard C. That is why English spelling can feel confusing sometimes. But the vowel trick helps: a/o/u means hard, e/i/y means soft.
