Letter D Sounds and Words

D is the fourth letter of the alphabet! D makes a duh sound, like at the start of DOG, DUCK, or DAY. Put the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth and drop it quickly — thats the D sound! D is a consonant and it starts many playful words.

The Core Idea

Uppercase D looks like a straight line with a big curve on the right, like a half-moon. Lowercase d looks like a small circle with a tall line on the right. Both say duh. Every word starting with D begins with that same sound.

Words That Start with D

Dog: a furry pet that barks. Duck: a bird that swims. Day: the time when the sun is out. Desk: what you sit at to write. Door: how you enter a room. Doll: a toy that looks like a person. Donut: a sweet round treat. Dinosaur: a huge ancient reptile. Every one starts with D.

Going Deeper

Lowercase d can be confused with lowercase b because they are mirror images. A helpful trick: picture the word BED. It looks like a tiny bed with posts on both ends — b on the left (the headboard) and d on the right (the footboard). Now you can tell them apart.
