Letter B Sounds and Words

B is the second letter of the alphabet! B makes a buh sound, like at the start of BALL, BOY, or BIG. Put your lips together lightly and pop them open — thats the B sound! B is a consonant, not a vowel, and it shows up at the start of lots of fun words.

The Core Idea

Uppercase B looks like a tall line with two bumps. Lowercase b looks like a tall line with one bump on the right. Both say buh. The letter B is used to start many common words: ball, bear, book, baby, bread. Every time you read a word starting with B, it starts with that buh sound.

Words That Start with B

Ball: round thing to throw. Bear: big furry animal. Book: pages bound together. Baby: a little person. Banana: a yellow fruit. Bird: flies in the sky. Bed: where you sleep. Bug: tiny creature with six legs. Every one starts with B.

Going Deeper

Lowercase b and lowercase d look similar but face opposite directions. b has its bump on the right; d has its bump on the left. A trick: if your left hand is a B and your right hand is a D, they face each other like the letters in BED. Many kids practice this until the letters stop looking alike.
