What Does a Marine Biologist Do?
A marine biologist is a scientist who studies life in the ocean. They might watch a pod of dolphins clicking and whistling to talk to each other, count baby sea turtles crawling to the water, or look at tiny plankton under a microscope. Some marine biologists wear scuba gear and swim with sharks. Others work on boats or in labs on land.
The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet, but scientists have explored less of it than the surface of the Moon!
Three Amazing Ocean Animals
The sea otter wraps itself in kelp like a blanket so it doesn't float away while it sleeps. The octopus has three hearts and can squeeze through a hole the size of a coin. The giant Pacific octopus can weigh as much as a grown man! And the seahorse is the only animal where the dad carries the babies in his belly pouch until they hatch.

Why the Ocean Needs Helpers
Every second breath you take has oxygen made by tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton. When the ocean gets sick from trash or pollution, marine biologists are the doctors who notice first and help fix it. That is why their work matters to every person on land too, even if they never go near the beach.
