The Squishy Science of Slime

What Makes Slime Stretchy?

Slime is stretchy because it is full of long, tangled chains of molecules called polymers. Imagine a big bowl of cooked spaghetti noodles โ€” the noodles are long and can slide past each other, but they are also tangled together so the whole pile holds its shape. Polymer chains in slime act the same way. When you add a special ingredient like liquid starch or a borax solution to glue, it links some of those long polymer chains together, turning runny glue into stretchy, moldable slime.

Solid or Liquid? Slime Is Both!

Slime is a strange material scientists call "non-Newtonian," which means it does not behave like most everyday liquids. If you scoop slime slowly, it flows and drips like a liquid. But if you smack it hard and fast with your fist, the polymer chains do not have time to slide past each other, so it suddenly feels firm like a solid. Cornstarch mixed with water, sometimes called "oobleck," behaves the same strange way, and scientists study materials like this to understand how molecules respond to fast versus slow force.

Real Scientists Who Study Squishy Stuff

People who study materials like slime for a living are called materials scientists. They do not just make toys โ€” they design materials for real jobs, like padding inside a bike helmet that stays soft but stiffens up fast to protect your head during a sudden crash. Materials scientists also help design things like stretchy phone cases, bouncy shoe soles, and bulletproof vests, all using the same basic idea: how molecules behave differently depending on how fast or slow force is applied to them.

Always make slime with an adult's help. Ingredients like borax solution should be measured and mixed by a grown-up, and you should always wash your hands with soap after playing with slime.

Make and Test Your Own Slime

With an adult's help, mix school glue with a small amount of liquid starch or contact-lens solution to form slime.
