Math Is Everywhere: Counting the World Around You
Look at your hands. You have 5 fingers on each one, and 10 fingers all together. You just did math! Counting your fingers is math. Math is not only in books. It is in your shoes (you need 2!), on the clock, in the buttons on your shirt, and in the slices of your pizza. Once you start looking, you will find numbers hiding everywhere.

Counting Is Math
When you count your toys, you are doing math. 1 teddy bear, 2 blocks, 3 cars. Each time you say the next number, the pile gets one bigger. Counting helps us know 'how many.' How many cookies are on the plate? How many kids are at the table? Numbers give us the answer.
Try counting your steps as you walk to the door. 1, 2, 3, 4! Counting out loud makes numbers your friends.
Shapes Are Math Too
Math is also about shapes. A ball is a circle. A window is a square. A slice of pizza is a triangle. Look around your room. Can you find something round? Something with 4 corners? Naming shapes is math you can do with your eyes.
Patterns Are Math
A pattern is something that repeats. Red, blue, red, blue, red, blue. What comes next? Blue! Patterns are on socks, on floors, and in songs. When you clap clap STOMP, clap clap STOMP, you are making a pattern. Finding what comes next is a big part of math.

1. Walk around your home with a grown-up. 2. Find and count 3 round (circle) things and 3 square things. 3. Count how many chairs are in your kitchen. 4. Find one pattern (like tiles on the floor or stripes on a blanket). 5. Draw a picture of your favorite thing you found and write the number of how many there were. Show your treasure map to your family!
