Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s: Skip Counting Superpowers
Look at your hands. Ten fingers! If you wanted to count all the fingers in your family of four people, you could count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... all the way to 40. Or you could count 10, 20, 30, 40 — just four hops! Skip counting means counting by a number bigger than one, and it lets you count big groups super fast.

Counting by 2s: Shoes and Socks
Shoes come in pairs. One pair is 2 shoes. Two pairs is 4 shoes. When we skip count by 2s we say: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12... Each number is 2 more than the last. Try this: line up 5 pairs of shoes (or draw 5 pairs). Count each pair as one skip: 2 (first pair), 4 (second pair), 6 (third pair), 8 (fourth pair), 10 (fifth pair). Five pairs of shoes is 10 shoes total!
Counting by 5s: Fingers and Nickels
Hold up one hand — that's 5 fingers. Two hands is 10. When we skip count by 5s we say: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30... A nickel is worth 5 cents, so if you have 4 nickels, you can skip count instead of counting one cent at a time: 5, 10, 15, 20. Four nickels equal 20 cents.
Counting by 10s: The Fastest Count of All
Counting by 10s is the quickest way to count a big pile. If you have 6 bags with 10 crayons in each bag, skip count: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. That's 60 crayons, counted in just 6 hops instead of 60! Notice something neat: when you count by 10s, the number in the ones place always stays a zero — 10, 20, 30, 40 — only the tens digit changes.
Every time you skip count, you're really adding the same number over and over. Counting by 5s (5, 10, 15, 20) is the same as 5+5+5+5. This is the exact idea multiplication will build on later — you're already doing early multiplication without the times sign!

Skip Counting Treasure Hunt
Gather 20 small objects (buttons, coins, blocks, or cereal pieces). First, arrange them into groups of 2 and skip count the total out loud. Then rearrange the SAME 20 objects into groups of 5 and skip count again. Finally arrange them into groups of 10 and skip count a third time. Deliverable: draw or write your three groupings and the counting sequence you said for each (by 2s, by 5s, by 10s), and circle which method felt fastest.
Clocks count minutes by 5s (the numbers 1-12 on a clock face each stand for 5 minutes). Dimes count money by 10s. Skip counting isn't just a math trick — it's how real things around your house are already organized.
