A stop sign has 8 sides. A slice of pizza has 3 sides. A window is often a rectangle with 4 sides. Shapes are hiding everywhere, and today you get to become a Shape Detective who spots them and figures out their secret patterns.

Counting Sides Tells You the Name
A circle is round and has no straight sides at all — it's one curvy line that never stops. A triangle always has exactly 3 straight sides and 3 corners (called vertices). A square has 4 sides that are all the exact same length, and a rectangle has 4 sides too, but only the sides across from each other match — like a door or a book cover.
Patterns Repeat On Purpose
A pattern is something that repeats in the same order, over and over. If you see circle, square, circle, square, circle... you already know the next shape has to be a square, because the pattern is telling you its secret rule: circle-square, circle-square. Patterns aren't just for shapes — you can find them in the stripes on a shirt, the beeps of a crosswalk signal, or the black-and-white keys on a piano.
Shapes Hiding in Your Neighborhood
A stop sign is an octagon (8 sides) — its shape is a signal all by itself, so drivers recognize STOP even from far away before they can read the letters. A slice of pizza and a triangle road-yield sign both have 3 sides. Pizza boxes, doors, and most books are rectangles. Learning to spot these means you'll never look at a stop sign the same way again.
Look down at your own shoe. What shape is the sole? What shape are the little holes for your laces? Real detectives notice details other people walk right past.
