Ten Is the Magic Number
When you count 1, 2, 3... all the way to 10, something new happens โ you start over! 11 is really "ten and one," 12 is "ten and two." Even the words show it: "thirteen" sounds like "three-teen" (ten plus three), and "twenty" sounds a bit like "two tens."
If you have 10 fingers and 10 toes, that's exactly one full "ten." Two friends together have 20 fingers โ that's two tens! This is why we count in groups of ten: it matches how our number system, and often our own bodies, are built.
Hold up both hands โ that's 10. Now find a friend and hold up both of your hands together โ that's 20! Keep adding a friend's two hands each time and count by tens: 10, 20, 30...
Reading a Hundred Chart
A hundred chart is a grid with the numbers 1 through 100 in order, ten numbers in each row. Every number directly below another number is exactly 10 more! For example, 24 is right below 14, because 14 + 10 = 24. This pattern helps you jump by tens without counting one by one.
Making a Ten to Add Faster
Here's a trick real students use: if you need to add 8 + 5, think of it as making a ten first. Take 2 from the 5 to give to the 8 (making 8 + 2 = 10), and you have 3 left over. So 10 + 3 = 13. This is faster than counting one by one, and it's exactly how many elementary math programs teach addition today.

Build Your Own Hundred Chart
On grid paper, write the numbers 1 to 100, ten per row. Circle every number that ends in 0 (10, 20, 30...) in one color. Then pick any two numbers in the same column and check that they differ by exactly 10. Show your chart to a family member and explain the pattern you found.
