Numbers Help Us Count
A number tells us how many. If you have 3 apples and your friend gives you 2 more, you now have 5 apples — you didn't need to count from the beginning, because you know 3 and 2 more makes 5. Numbers also help us compare: 5 apples is more than 2 apples, and 2 is fewer than 5.
Shapes Are Everywhere
A stop sign has 8 sides — that's an octagon. A slice of pizza is shaped like a triangle. A wheel is a circle. Look at your classroom: the door is probably a rectangle, and the clock might be a circle. Shapes aren't just in math books; they're in every building, sign, and toy around you.
Next time you're in the car or walking outside, count how many circles you can spot in 1 minute — stop signs, wheels, buttons, clocks. You'll be surprised how many there are!
Patterns: Math's Secret Rhythm
A pattern is something that repeats in a predictable way, like red-blue-red-blue-red-blue. Stripes on a shirt, the beat in a song (clap-clap-stomp, clap-clap-stomp), and even the days of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday...) are all patterns. Once you know the pattern, you can guess what comes next!

Shape and Pattern Hunt
Walk around your home or classroom with a grown-up or on your own. Find and draw 3 different shapes you see (like a circle, square, or triangle) and 1 pattern (like stripes, tiles, or a repeating design). Label each shape with its name.
