Skip Counting by 2s: The Secret Pattern in Numbers

Line up your shoes on the floor. You do not have just 'shoes' โ€” you have pairs, two at a time: 2, 4, 6, 8! Counting by pairs like this is called skip counting, and it is a secret pattern hiding in socks, mittens, egg cartons, and even insect legs.

What You'll Learn

You will learn what skip counting by 2s means. You will learn to find things that naturally come in pairs. You will learn to say and write the pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and beyond.

What Does Skip Counting Mean?

Regular counting goes one number at a time: 1, 2, 3, 4. Skip counting by 2s means you jump straight to every second number: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. You are adding 2 each time instead of adding 1.

Finding Pairs All Around You

Shoes come in pairs of 2. Mittens come in pairs of 2. A spider has 4 pairs of legs, which is 8 legs total. A carton of a dozen eggs holds 6 pairs of eggs, which is 12 eggs. Once you start looking, pairs are everywhere.

The Even Number Trick

Every number you land on while skip counting by 2s starting from 2 is called an even number: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. If a number ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, it is even, and it will show up in the skip-counting-by-2s pattern.

Practicing the Pattern

Try saying the pattern out loud, faster each time: 2... 4... 6... 8... 10... 12... 14... The more you practice, the faster you will be able to count groups of objects in pairs instead of counting one at a time.

Pair Hunt at Home

Find 3 different things at home that come in pairs, like shoes, socks, or mittens. Count each group by 2s out loud and write down the total. Draw a picture of your favorite pair and label how many items it has.
